If a specific page on a website doesn't load for some reason or if a link is broken, the visitor will see an error page with some generic message. The page shall have nothing in common with the rest of the Internet site, that can make the visitor leave your site. A potential solution in this case is a function made available from some hosting providers - the ability to set your own custom error pages that shall have the exact same layout as your Internet site and which can contain any images or text that you'd like depending on the specific error. There are four well-known errors that may occur and they involve the following so-called HTTP status codes - 400, when your world-wide web browser sends a bad request to the hosting server and it cannot be processed; 401, in case you are supposed to log in to see a page, but you have not done so yet; 403, if you do not have an authorization to see a particular page; and 404, if a link that you've clicked leads to a file which does not exist. In all of these scenarios, visitors will be able to see your personalized content instead of a generic error page.
Custom Error Pages in Shared Web Hosting
You can set up personalized error pages for any of your domains or subdomains. The feature is supported by all shared web hosting solutions that we offer, so when you log in to the Hepsia Control Panel and go to the Hosted Domains section, you can click on the Edit button for a domain/subdomain and in the pop-up that"ll appear, you may select the kind of error page which should appear - a default one from our system, a conventional Apache server page or a custom one. For the latter alternative, you have to assign the URL to the page, so when you use customized pages, you have to upload the files in your website hosting account first. An alternative way is to use an .htaccess file located inside the domain or subdomain folder with a line for each error type. The actual syntax can be seen in our Knowledge Base, so that you can use this feature even if you do not have any previous experience.
Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Hosting
When you host your Internet sites in a semi-dedicated server account with us, you'll be able to set customized error pages for any of them easily through our custom Hepsia hosting CP. With only a few mouse clicks in the Hosted Domains section, you can modify the default setting from a system page to a custom made one for any of the four error types. All you need to do is provide a link to each and every file that you've uploaded before that and then save the change. If required, you shall be able to revert this customization whenever you want and in exactly the same way. If you want, you can use an .htaccess file as well. It should be created/uploaded inside the domain or subdomain folder belonging to the site whose error pages you intend to change and the content for such a file can be found in our Help article for this matter.
